Tirupur Court Delivers Life Sentence in 2009 Murder Case Over Loan Dispute
In a significant verdict, the Tirupur First Additional District Court has sentenced a 36-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his friend in 2009. The judgment was delivered by Judge M E Padma on Wednesday, bringing a long-standing case to a close.
Details of the Crime and Conviction
The accused, Ilayaraja, and the victim, Prabhu, aged 25, were both originally from Thanjavur district. They shared accommodation at Priyanka Nagar in Veerapandi, Tirupur, and were employed at a local dyeing factory. The tragic incident stemmed from a financial dispute involving a loan of Rs 7,000 that Ilayaraja had borrowed from Prabhu.
On January 13, 2009, Prabhu demanded the repayment of the money, which escalated into a heated argument and physical altercation. During the scuffle, Ilayaraja allegedly attacked Prabhu with an iron rod, resulting in his immediate death. In a further act of callousness, Ilayaraja stole Prabhu's mobile phone and Rs 6,800 from his bag.
To conceal the crime, Ilayaraja placed Prabhu's body in a sack and disposed of it by throwing it into a temple well near Vanji Nagar. The Veerapandi police swiftly registered a murder case and apprehended Ilayaraja, leading to a thorough investigation and subsequent trial.
Court's Verdict and Legal Proceedings
After a comprehensive trial, the court found Ilayaraja guilty of murder. Judge M E Padma imposed a life imprisonment sentence, emphasizing the severity of the crime. Additionally, the court levied a fine of Rs 12,000 on the convict.
