A 46-year-old life convict incarcerated at the Central Prison in Trichy passed away at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) after failing to respond to medical treatment.
Background of the Deceased
The deceased, identified as V Senthil, a resident of Veeravanchi Nagar in Soorakudi, Ariyalur district, was serving a life sentence in connection with a case registered in 2017 at the All-Women Police Station in Jayamkondam. He was convicted under Sections 376(ii)(i) and 506(ii) of the Indian Penal Code.
Sequence of Events
Senthil had been in judicial custody since September 22, 2022. According to prison officials, he started complaining of severe abdominal pain and fatigue on April 7. He was promptly admitted to the intensive care unit at MGMGH. Despite medical intervention, his condition deteriorated, and he succumbed on April 24 at approximately 8:45 pm.
Legal Proceedings
Based on a complaint lodged by a prison official, the Government Hospital police have registered a case under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The body has been preserved at the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Authorities have initiated further investigations into the circumstances leading to his death.
