Chennai police have taken legal action against a 24-year-old law student following a late-night altercation in the Vyasarpadi area, where he allegedly attempted to assault a police officer. The incident unfolded around midnight on Thursday when a routine patrol led to a confrontation with a group celebrating Christmas on the road.
Midnight Patrol Leads to Confrontation
Officers from the MKB Nagar police station were conducting a patrol in Vyasarpadi in the early hours of Thursday. During their rounds, they encountered a group of individuals who had gathered on the road to cut a cake in celebration of Christmas. The police personnel requested the group to disperse from the public roadway to maintain order and ensure safety.
Argument Escalates to Attempted Assault
The request to break up the gathering did not go down well with some members of the group. What began as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a heated argument. During this confrontation, one of the men, identified as Karthikeyan, aged 24, allegedly directed verbal abuse at a police sub-inspector present at the scene. The situation deteriorated further when Karthikeyan attempted to physically assault the officer, prompting immediate intervention from the police team.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
The MKB Nagar police swiftly registered a formal case against the accused individual based on the complaint filed by the officer. Investigations revealed that Karthikeyan is a law student currently pursuing his studies in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The police have booked him under relevant sections of the law for his actions, which included verbal abuse and the attempt to assault a public servant on duty. Authorities have confirmed that a further investigation into the matter is currently underway to examine all aspects of the incident.
This case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement during public celebrations and underscores the legal consequences of obstructing or attacking police personnel while they perform their official duties.
