In a shocking incident in Rudrapur, located in Udham Singh Nagar district, a 57-year-old labourer was allegedly subjected to a violent assault following a dispute over unpaid wages. The victim, identified as Ganesh Mandal, sustained severe injuries, including a ruptured eardrum, highlighting the grim realities faced by workers in wage-related conflicts.
Details of the Wage Dispute and Assault
The altercation erupted when Ganesh Mandal visited contractor Bharat Adhikari to demand pending wages of Rs 2,000 owed to his son, who works as a painter. According to the official complaint filed with the police, the situation escalated rapidly. Adhikari's son allegedly pushed Mandal out of the house, after which he, along with his father and brother, proceeded to brutally thrash the labourer.
The assault left Mandal with multiple injuries, most notably a ruptured eardrum, which necessitated immediate medical attention. He was initially taken to the district hospital for emergency care but was later referred to a specialized hospital in Haldwani for further treatment due to the severity of his condition.
Police Response and Legal Action
Following the incident, Mandal's wife, Aarti, filed a formal complaint with the local police authorities. In response, an FIR (First Information Report) was registered against the three accused individuals. SHO (City) Manoj Raturi confirmed the legal proceedings, stating, "A case has been registered under BNS sections 352, which pertains to intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and 115(2), for voluntarily causing hurt. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation."
The registration of the FIR underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are treating this case, as it involves both physical harm and potential breaches of public order. The police have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure justice is served.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This incident sheds light on the vulnerabilities faced by labourers and low-wage workers in disputes over unpaid earnings. Wage disputes are not uncommon in the region, but such violent escalations raise concerns about worker safety and the enforcement of labour laws. The community in Rudrapur has expressed alarm over the brutality of the attack, calling for stricter measures to protect workers from exploitation and violence.
As the investigation progresses, there is a growing demand for accountability and preventive actions to avoid similar occurrences in the future. The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust mechanisms to address wage grievances and ensure the well-being of all workers.
