Senior Congress leader Padmaraj R Poojary has strongly endorsed the newly proposed Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, 2025, stating it is a vital step towards preserving social harmony in the state. The KPCC general secretary highlighted a worrying rise in inflammatory speeches across Karnataka, including the coastal belt, which he claims have led to violent outcomes.
Addressing the Rise of Inflammatory Rhetoric
Poojary pointed out that there has been a significant increase in speeches designed to incite conflict on religious and political grounds throughout Karnataka. He expressed grave concern that such hate speech has directly resulted in attempted murders. The leader specifically mentioned that vulnerable youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are often the primary targets and victims of such divisive rhetoric.
"During such times, when the provocation of youth is on the rise, this bill will be very helpful in maintaining social harmony in the state and preventing conflicts arising from hate speech," Poojary stated. He emphasized that the legislation is a long-awaited response to a persistent problem.

He recalled that following the tragic murders of Suhas Shetty and Abdul Rahiman in the district, a Congress-appointed fact-finding committee visited the area. The committee had pledged to push for stringent laws against hate speech. "Accordingly, the approval of the bill by the state government is commendable," he added.
