Kolkata to Provide Alternative Accommodation for CISF Personnel by April 30

In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court was informed on Monday that the West Bengal government will secure alternative accommodation for Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel currently stationed at Tangra's Pei May Chinese High School. The state counsel assured the court that the relocation will be completed by April 30, addressing concerns over the temporary housing arrangement that has sparked legal and community issues.

Court Directs Home Secretary to File Affidavit

The court has directed the home secretary to submit an affidavit confirming that the school premises will be vacated by the specified deadline and that a suitable alternative place of accommodation will be arranged. This directive comes after the school authorities sought the court's intervention to reclaim eight rooms for Chinese New Year celebrations, highlighting the dual use of the facility as a community centre and place of worship for the local Chinese population.

Background of the CISF Deployment

The CISF jawans were deployed for guarding and protection duties at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following a rape-murder incident, with 130 personnel housed in 18 rooms at the school for two months. However, the arrangement led to conflicts when the school requested the temporary handover of rooms for festive activities. CISF counsel informed Justice Krishna Rao that after relinquishing the rooms, personnel had to sleep in verandahs alongside their firearms and ammunition, raising safety and dignity concerns.

Justice Rao Emphasizes Respect for Defence Personnel

During the hearing, Justice Rao emphasized the need to respect defence personnel, stating, "After all, they are the defence personnel; we should show some respect to them. Let them remain on the premises; they should not face any problem." This remark underscored the court's stance on ensuring the well-being of the CISF jawans while balancing the school's cultural needs.

Resolution and Future Steps

The case, which initially pertained to the temporary use of rooms, evolved into a broader discussion on alternative accommodation. The state's commitment to vacate the school by April 30 aims to resolve the dispute, allowing the CISF personnel to continue their duties without disruption and the school to resume its community functions. This move is expected to alleviate tensions and provide a more permanent solution for all parties involved.
