Kolkata Police Escalate Investigation in Olypub 'Wrong Meat' Social Media Row
Kolkata Police have significantly intensified their probe into multiple complaints filed against social media influencer Sayak Chakraborty concerning the controversial Olypub 'wrong meat' incident. Investigators have now successfully recorded official statements from all four individuals who lodged separate cases against Chakraborty, marking a crucial development in the ongoing investigation.
Complainants Provide Detailed Statements to Authorities
Theatre artist Joyraj Bhattacharjee became the first complainant to have his statement formally recorded late on Thursday night at the Park Street police station. The remaining three complainants—Chiroshree Mukherjee, Pinki Ghosh Dastidar, and another individual—appeared together at the police station on Friday afternoon to provide their detailed accounts to investigating officers.
"We are systematically recording statements from all complainants as well as witnesses who were present during the altercation at Olypub last week," confirmed a senior Kolkata Police officer involved in the investigation. "This process is essential for building a comprehensive understanding of the events and their aftermath."
Complainants Express Concerns Over Communal Tensions
Chiroshree Mukherjee, a school teacher and one of the primary complainants, revealed that police questioned them about their personal knowledge of Chakraborty and their motivations for filing complaints. "We explained to the authorities that we were profoundly disturbed by the two live videos Chakraborty uploaded and the subsequent flood of communal comments they triggered across social media platforms," Mukherjee stated.
"We expressed genuine fear that such inflammatory content could potentially lead to unrest within the city and emphasized our desire for strict legal action against him," she added, highlighting the broader social concerns driving their complaints.
Complainants Commit to Full Cooperation with Investigation
Another complainant, techie Pinki Ghosh Dastidar, confirmed that all parties have assured police of their complete cooperation throughout the investigative process. "Now that our official statements have been properly recorded, we are confident that the investigation will gain substantial momentum and proceed with greater urgency," Dastidar remarked.
The controversy originally erupted after Chakraborty uploaded two live videos on social media alleging he had been served incorrect meat at the iconic Park Street restaurant Olypub. Despite receiving an official notice from police to appear at the station and record his statement, Chakraborty has yet to respond to authorities' requests.
Complainants Reject Claims of Withdrawing Legal Action
In a significant development, complainant Joyraj Bhattacharjee took to Facebook to clarify his position, noting he visited the Park Street police station well past midnight to provide his statement. "Unlike a certain influencer who claims on social media that he withdrew his complaint without following proper legal procedures, we are absolutely not withdrawing ours—neither on social media platforms, nor at the police station, nor in any court of law," Bhattacharjee wrote emphatically.
Multiple attempts by journalists to contact Sayak Chakraborty throughout Friday proved unsuccessful, leaving his side of the story currently unrepresented in official proceedings. The Kolkata Police investigation continues as authorities gather additional evidence and witness testimonies related to the incident that has captured significant public attention.
