Kolkata Murder Mystery Solved: Mumbai Tailor and Accomplice Nabbed After Five-Month Investigation
In a significant breakthrough, the Ballygunge Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested the primary accused, Nur, a tailor working in Mumbai, and his accomplice, Nazmul, in connection with the brutal murder of Jadavpur resident Rinku Samaddar. The 38-year-old woman was found dead near Brace Bridge in the port area more than five months after she was returning from Mumbai on the Geetanjali Express.
Key Lead from a Fateful Phone Call
Investigators revealed that the arrests stemmed from a crucial lead: a call Rinku purportedly made to her husband from the accused's phone while aboard the train. During this conversation, Rinku, expressing dissatisfaction with her life in Mumbai, requested her husband not to search for her. This single piece of evidence became the cornerstone of the investigation.
Officers meticulously analyzed call records from 864 potential suspects, including passengers on the train and acquaintances of Rinku in both Mumbai and Kolkata. "We narrowed our focus to about 40 calls and eventually tracked down the accused's phone, which had been sold to another individual. From the buyer, we managed to locate the accused," explained an investigating officer.
Discovery of the Body and Initial Findings
On the night of August 28, 2025, Rinku's body was discovered beside the railway tracks between Brace Bridge and Santoshpur station. Authorities noted that the accused were not hardened criminals, which contributed to Nur's inability to handle the psychological pressure after he slit the woman's throat on Hyde Road. He fled the scene without robbing her, leaving the motive behind the murder unclear initially.
Rinku had traveled alone from Mumbai to Kolkata on the day of the murder. Her identity was confirmed through her Aadhaar card, and her sister, Nibha Singh, identified the body. Based on Singh's complaint, the railway police registered a case of murder and theft.
CCTV Footage Traces the Victim's Movements
CCTV footage played a pivotal role in reconstructing the events. Cameras at Santragachhi station captured Rinku alighting from the train, leaving the platform with a young man, and entering a taxi. Additional footage from Sealdah station showed her boarding a local train to Budge Budge with the same man. Images of them disembarking at Brace Bridge were also recorded, providing critical visual evidence.
Chain of Events Unraveled During Interrogation
Questioning of the two accused revealed that the sequence of events began at the Mumbai railway station. Nur and Nazmul, returning to Kolkata on holiday, encountered Rinku at the station. After a disagreement with her husband, Kartik Das, Rinku decided to return to Kolkata, where her parental home is located in the Jadavpur area.
The accused noticed Rinku's gold jewellery and initiated a conversation. During their interaction, Rinku asked to use Nur's phone to inform her husband not to look for her. Nur also paid for Rinku's ticket. Learning that she had not arranged accommodation in Kolkata, Nur suggested she stay at his brother-in-law's place near Brace Bridge for a few days.
They traveled by taxi from Santragachhi to Sealdah and then took a train to Brace Bridge. Nur instructed Nazmul to prepare a meal at his brother-in-law's house and told Rinku they would rest before leaving the station. Seizing this opportunity, Nur reportedly purchased a knife from a nearby shop. He then walked with Rinku along the tracks and, under the cover of darkness, killed her before fleeing.
Nur had already taken Rinku's cellphone, which he later sold. Legal action is being recommended against those who purchased the phones belonging to both Rinku and Nur, highlighting the broader implications of the case.
