Police Team Attacked During Kharar Drug Operation, Four Suspects Arrested
In a concerning repeat of violence against law enforcement, a police team came under attack in Kharar, Mohali, on Tuesday. This marks the second such incident within a week, highlighting escalating tensions during anti-drug operations in the area.
Dramatic Confrontation During Raid
According to official reports, the Kharar police had deployed a team to trace individuals involved in drug peddling and robbery activities. During their surveillance in Sector 115, officers noticed a group of youths behaving suspiciously. Upon questioning, the suspects reportedly appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, raising immediate red flags.
When police attempted to apprehend the individuals, the situation turned violent. The accused allegedly tried to escape in their vehicle, launching an attack on the police party. In a dangerous escalation, they attempted to run over personnel with their vehicle, putting officers' lives at risk.
Swift Police Response and Arrests
Despite the violent resistance, the police team demonstrated remarkable composure and managed to overpower all four suspects on the spot. The arrested individuals have been identified as Amanpreet Singh, Amandeep Singh, Harvinder Singh, and Mandeep Singh, all residents of Kharar.
During the operation, police made significant recoveries including 83 grams of heroin, Rs 15,000 in suspected drug money, and seized two vehicles from the accused. These seizures provide crucial evidence linking the suspects to narcotics trafficking activities.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the NDPS Act at Sadar Kharar police station. Following their arrest, the suspects were produced before a court which remanded them to three days' police custody for further investigation.
After medical examination and dope tests were conducted, Section 27 of the NDPS Act was added to the case, which deals with punishment for consumption of any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance.
Pattern of Violence Against Police
This incident follows a similar attack that occurred just days earlier on April 15, when two police teams deployed to trace anti-social elements involved in drug peddling and robbery were attacked in Kharar. In that separate case, six accused were later arrested after a case was registered at the same Sadar Kharar police station.
The back-to-back attacks on police personnel during drug-related operations suggest a worrying trend of increased resistance from criminal elements in the region. Police authorities are likely to review their operational protocols to ensure officer safety while maintaining pressure on drug networks.
These incidents underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating the drug trade, particularly when suspects resort to violence to avoid apprehension. The successful arrests and seizures in both cases demonstrate police determination to tackle this menace despite the risks involved.
