Kerala Police Uncover Major Explosives Cache Concealed in Onion-Laden Truck

In a dramatic late-night operation, Tirurangadi Police in Malappuram district, Kerala, seized a massive haul of explosives on Saturday, believed to be destined for illegal quarrying activities. The discovery was made after authorities acted on confidential intelligence, leading to the interception of a truck carrying the dangerous materials cleverly hidden beneath a load of onions.

Details of the Seizure and Police Operation

According to senior police officials, the seizure included a staggering 89,600 gelatin sticks and 10,500 detonators, along with associated fuse wires. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, a police team reached the parking area of a bricks shop in Chemmad around 1:30 AM. Upon arrival, they found the explosives concealed in the truck, but the suspects had already fled the scene.

Police reported that the accused individuals arrived at the location in a car accompanied by another truck, intending to transfer the explosives. However, they managed to escape before authorities could apprehend them. In addition to the truck containing the explosives, police seized the other truck and the car used by the suspects.

Investigation and Suspected Illegal Activities

An officer from Tirurangadi Police stated, "As per our information, the explosives were meant for use in quarries for mining. These were brought illegally without any documents to conduct unauthorized quarrying. We are investigating if the person who owns the brick store is also involved." The police have registered an FIR and launched a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Authorities revealed that all suspects have gone into hiding after switching off their mobile phones, complicating efforts to track them down. Police are actively pursuing leads to arrest the accused and uncover the full extent of the illegal operation.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Efforts

This significant seizure highlights concerns about the illicit use of explosives in unauthorized mining and quarrying activities, which pose serious safety and environmental risks. The police emphasized that such operations are conducted without proper documentation or regulatory oversight, making them particularly dangerous.

Efforts are ongoing to determine the source of the explosives and identify all individuals involved in the smuggling network. The case underscores the vigilance of Kerala police in combating illegal activities and ensuring public safety in the region.
