Those planning to fly into Kenya are also facing travel obstacles, with many unable to commence their journeys as scheduled. India represents a crucial tourism market for Kenya, having sent over 130,000 visitors to the East African nation last year, making it the country's fifth largest source of international tourists.
IndiGo, which operates the only direct flight connection between India and Kenya—a daily Mumbai-Nairobi-Mumbai service—was forced to cancel its Tuesday flight operations. The airline's decision has left numerous passengers in limbo, with uncertainty surrounding whether Wednesday's flight will proceed as planned. The airline reported experiencing delays of up to four hours for departures from JKIA and has made necessary adjustments to its flight network in response to the ongoing situation.
In their official statement, Kenya Airways expressed regret for the inconvenience caused: "We sincerely regret the inconvenience and are working closely with the relevant aviation authorities and airport stakeholders to minimise the impact on our customers and maintain safe operations. Our teams are doing everything possible to ensure the safety, security, and comfort of our customers, which remains our highest priority. Passengers are advised to expect schedule adjustments."
Stranded Passengers Face Accommodation Challenges
Many affected travelers are now scrambling to find affordable lodging options while awaiting resolution of the airport crisis. One Indian passenger, who was scheduled to depart Nairobi on Tuesday, received the flight cancellation notification late Monday night, leaving them with limited financial resources at the conclusion of their trip.
"We were at the end of our Nairobi visit and had spent almost all the money we had for this trip," the stranded traveler explained. "I contacted hotels and the minimum rate we got was $140 a night. One of the managers happened to be an Indian and advised us to check-in on Monday night itself as he said he was getting calls for booking rooms by other airlines for their stranded guests. He warned us that coming to check-in on Tuesday to save one day's charge might mean not getting a room at all."
Faced with these challenging circumstances, the family ultimately opted for a more economical Airbnb accommodation. "We just hope IndiGo operates its flight and takes us back home," the passenger added, reflecting the anxiety shared by many travelers caught in the disruption.
