Security Forces Intensify Search Operations in Kishtwar Amid Challenging Weather Conditions
In the face of heavy snowfall, a joint team of security forces has been conducting extensive search operations in the dense forests of Jammu & Kashmir's Kishtwar district for the past two days. This follows a fresh gunfight with a group of Pakistani terrorists that occurred late Sunday, marking the third such encounter in the Chatroo belt within the past week.
Operation Trashi-I Enters Critical Phase
Operation Trashi-I, which was launched on January 18, entered its tenth day on Tuesday. The initial fire exchange between troops and terrorists took place in Sonnar village near Mandral-Singhpora on January 18. During this engagement, eight security personnel sustained injuries, with one eventually succumbing to their wounds.
Subsequently, another gunfight erupted with holed-up ultras in Singhpora on January 22. This was followed by yet another firefight on January 24, resulting in the death of a Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist.
Latest Encounter Details and Tactical Response
The most recent gun battle commenced around 10:20 PM when a joint search team, comprising personnel from the Army, Para (Special Forces), and the J&K Police's Special Operations Group (SOG), came under fire from terrorists hiding in the forests of Janseer-Kandiwar late Sunday. After an exchange of bullets, the terrorists—estimated to be two or three in number—managed to escape under the cover of darkness, according to official sources.
Despite the heavy snowfall in the Chatroo belt, security forces have remained steadfast in their pursuit. Troops have been trudging through more than two feet of snow, demonstrating remarkable resilience in challenging terrain.
Expanded Operational Area and Advanced Surveillance
Officials have reported that the area of operation has been expanded to new locations along the Kishtwar–Sinthan road. To enhance tracking capabilities, the Army has deployed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones, alongside sniffer dog units, to locate the fleeing terrorists.
Additional deployments have been strategically arranged to seal potential escape routes and prevent the ultras from slipping into neighbouring forested zones. This multi-pronged approach aims to contain and neutralize the terrorist threat effectively.
Background and Previous Operations
Operation Trashi-I was initiated on January 18, just two days after security forces successfully busted three terrorist hideouts in Kathua district on January 16. However, during encounters in Kamad Nallah, Kalaban, and Dhanu Parole areas, the fleeing ultras managed to evade capture.
Recoveries from these operations included various items such as food supplies, utensils, a cooking gas cylinder, empty M4 cartridges, and other logistical materials. In a related development, three suspects were detained for questioning in Kathua after Pakistani mobile numbers were detected in their cellphones.
Ongoing Vigilance and Commitment
The situation in the region remains under close surveillance, with official sources emphasizing that operations will continue until the area is fully cleared of terrorist presence. The persistent efforts of security forces highlight their unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in Jammu & Kashmir, even amidst adverse weather conditions.
