Man from Jammu and Kashmir Detained After Alleged Namaz Attempt at Ram Mandir
J&K man held for alleged namaz attempt at Ayodhya Ram Mandir

A 55-year-old man hailing from Jammu and Kashmir was taken into custody on Saturday following an incident at the revered Ram Mandir complex in Ayodhya. Uttar Pradesh police stated that the individual allegedly tried to offer Islamic prayers, or namaz, within the temple premises and raised slogans when confronted by security personnel.

Details of the Ayodhya Temple Incident

The detained individual has been identified as Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir, according to Superintendent of Police (Security) Balramchari Dubey. Officials reported that Sheikh entered the temple during the day, visited the shrine, and later settled near the Sita Rasoi area where he purportedly began preparations to offer namaz.

Vigilant security staff observed his actions and moved swiftly to intervene. He was subsequently detained by the temple's security team and handed over to the local police authorities. Preliminary reports suggest the man raised slogans when stopped, though police have noted this specific allegation is still under verification.

Family's Claim of Mental Illness and Police Investigation

In a significant development, Sheikh's family has asserted that he suffers from mental health issues. They have provided medical documentation from the psychiatry department of Srinagar Medical College to support their claim. His son, Imran, speaking from their Shopian residence, expressed shock and stated the family was unaware of Sheikh's journey to Ayodhya.

"We didn't know anything about it. He is totally unsound," Imran told reporters. He elaborated that his father frequently leaves home without informing the family and does not stay for long periods. "He had visited his in-laws' place five to six days ago. He keeps leaving and does not stay at home," Imran added, noting his father often visits mosques.

Neighbors in Shopian corroborated the family's account, mentioning Sheikh has been undergoing treatment and is on medication. One neighbor remarked, "Had he been of sound mind, he would not have prayed inside a temple. He would have known it is a temple. He often leaves home like this."

Investigators are currently questioning Sheikh to determine his intent. They are also verifying his travel details, including the purpose of his visit to Ayodhya and whether he had any accomplices. During initial checks, police found items like cashews and raisins in his possession. The man reportedly told investigators he was traveling to Ajmer.

Security Review and Official Response

In the wake of this event, senior police officers and intelligence agencies are conducting a thorough review of the security arrangements at the Ram Mandir complex. The incident has highlighted potential vulnerabilities, prompting a reassessment of protocols. Both the Ayodhya district administration and the Ram temple trust have opted not to comment on the matter at this time.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events and the detainee's motivations, while also considering the medical evidence presented by his family.
