Vigilance Officials Nab Jharsuguda Clerk in Bribery Sting Operation
In a significant crackdown on corruption, vigilance sleuths on Wednesday arrested a head clerk posted at the office of the chief district medical and public health officer in Jharsuguda. The arrest was made for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2,500 to process an application related to the practical training of nursing students.
Accused Caught Red-Handed in Trap
The accused, identified as Anit Kumar Guru, was apprehended while allegedly taking the bribe from a teacher at a general nursing training school in the district. According to vigilance officials, the money was demanded to facilitate the engagement of GNM students in primary health centres and community health centres for their practical training during the 2026–27 academic session.
Officials revealed that there were prior allegations against Guru, accusing him of harassing nursing institutes and demanding illegal gratification to clear such applications. When the complainant approached him for approval, the clerk allegedly reiterated his demand, which prompted the teacher to lodge a formal complaint with the vigilance department.
Recovery of Bribe and Legal Action
Acting swiftly on the complaint, a vigilance team laid a trap and caught Guru in the act of accepting the money. The entire bribe amount of Rs 2,500 was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence. Following the arrest, simultaneous searches were launched at two locations linked to the accused to investigate allegations of disproportionate assets.
A case has been registered against Guru at the Rourkela vigilance police station under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Further investigation is currently underway to uncover any additional misconduct or assets acquired through illicit means.
Background and Implications
This incident highlights ongoing issues of corruption within administrative processes, particularly in sectors like healthcare and education. The vigilance department's proactive measures aim to deter such illegal activities and ensure transparency in public services. The arrest serves as a warning to other officials who might engage in similar practices, emphasizing the consequences of demanding bribes for official duties.
