A horrific accident in Jaipur late Friday night claimed one life and left at least 15 people injured after a speeding luxury car lost control and ploughed into crowded roadside eateries. The incident occurred near Kharbas Circle off Vande Matram Road in the Mansarovar area, sending shockwaves through the locality.
Chaos on Vande Matram Road
The tragedy unfolded around 9:20 PM on Friday night when a red luxury car, moving at a very high speed, first rammed into the Kharbas Circle. The impact caused the driver to lose control, sending the vehicle careening into food carts, shacks, and people who were having dinner and snacks at the makeshift roadside stalls.
"The car came at very high speed, struck the circle, lost control and flew straight into people milling by the roadside. There was a huge hue and cry, with several people writhing in pain," recounted an eyewitness, Vijay Choudhary. Another bystander described the terrifying moments, stating people had no time to react as the car bore down on them within seconds. "Some were crushed under the wheels of the car, others were tossed to the other side of the road; it was complete mayhem," the witness said.
Severe Impact and Public Fury
The force of the collision was devastating. Steel cabins used for selling tea were twisted out of shape, with overturned carts and debris strewn across the road. The scene was littered with parts of the luxury car, broken pull-carts, and scattered food items.
In the immediate aftermath, three occupants of the car were pulled out by members of the public and beaten up. Muhana police station SHO Bhupendra Singh, among the first officers to arrive, confirmed that the car's occupants had to be rescued from the angry crowd. "People were scattered all over the place; the car must have been driven at very high speed," he observed.
Ongoing Investigation and Unintended Consequence
DCP (South) Rajarshi Raj Varma confirmed the fatality and warned that the number of injured could rise. Preliminary investigations by the police suggest the car appears to be registered out of state in the name of a trust. The probe into the cause of the accident and the exact speed of the vehicle is ongoing.
In an ironic twist, the first responders at the scene were three members of a special team of the Jaipur police who were in the area looking for a wanted suspect. In the melee that followed the crash, the suspect managed to flee, taking advantage of the chaos, police revealed.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about reckless driving and road safety in busy urban areas, particularly around vulnerable roadside markets and eateries.
