Noida Police Cracks Down on Instagram-Based Illegal Weapons Trade
In a significant crackdown, Noida police have dismantled a gang that was using Instagram to source and sell illegal firearms, leading to the arrest of two youths and the detention of a juvenile. The operation, conducted on Thursday, resulted in the recovery of 11 firearms, including five pistols and six country-made weapons, from the accused.
Details of the Arrest and Operation
The accused have been identified as Abhishek from Sorkha village and Sameer from Sector 125, both of whom are Class 10 pass-outs. According to police reports, the gang utilized Instagram to finalize deals, with pistols priced at Rs 45,000 each and country-made firearms around Rs 10,000 apiece. The gang had been operational for nearly 18 months, during which they allegedly sold approximately 50 illegal weapons.
Additional DCP Manisha Singh of Phase-1 Police Station revealed that the bust followed a tip-off about youths involved in illegal arms trafficking in the area. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, a police team set up a cordon near a culvert at the 14A drain and intercepted the three accused. All three were apprehended from Sector 14, with the two adults arrested under relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the juvenile detained for presentation before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Modus Operandi and Investigation Insights
During interrogation, the gang members disclosed that they contacted buyers and negotiated deals over Instagram before conducting in-person handovers of the weapons. Police noted that the low entry barrier of social media platforms, combined with high regional demand for firearms, enabled the group to sustain their illicit racket for over a year before being detected.
Investigators emphasized that the accused used the weapons not only for profit but also to assert dominance in their locality. Currently, police are intensifying efforts to identify and trace the supplier who provided the gang with the firearms, aiming to dismantle the broader network supporting such illegal activities.
