Inspector Killed in Surajkund Mela Swing Collapse Just Before Retirement
In a tragic incident at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, Inspector Jagdish Prasad lost his life while attempting to rescue people trapped on a malfunctioning electric swing. The accident occurred on Saturday, with the inspector being just two months away from his scheduled retirement.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Inspector Jagdish Prasad, a native of Mathura, had been recently transferred from Sonipat to Palwal on November 25 last year. He was appointed as the station house officer of Chandhut police station in December, but was later relieved of this post for administrative reasons on January 27 and sent to the police lines in Palwal.
On January 31, he was assigned duty at the Surajkund Mela and placed in charge of the amusement rides area. When an electrical swing at the fair malfunctioned and tilted dangerously with several riders trapped, Inspector Prasad immediately rushed to assist in the rescue operation.
Tragically, moments after he began the rescue effort, the entire structure collapsed completely. The falling swing struck Inspector Prasad, causing severe head and facial injuries that proved fatal.
Reactions and Investigation
The inspector's death has sent shockwaves through both the police force and the mela administration. Colleagues have described him as a committed officer who consistently prioritized duty over personal safety.
Haryana cabinet minister Arvind Sharma expressed profound grief over the incident. In an official statement, he confirmed that Inspector Prasad "sacrificed his life while rescuing people trapped in the jhula" as it fell out of control.
The minister further announced that orders have been issued for a thorough inquiry into the incident, with strict action promised against those found responsible for the swing malfunction and subsequent collapse.
Additional Casualties and Background
Two women police personnel were also injured during the same rescue operation and are currently undergoing medical treatment. Their condition remains under observation by medical authorities.
Inspector Prasad's career trajectory shows his recent administrative movements within the Haryana police force, highlighting his dedication to service despite frequent transfers and reassignments in the months leading up to his planned retirement.
The Surajkund International Crafts Mela, a major cultural event attracting thousands of visitors, now faces serious questions about safety protocols for amusement rides and emergency response procedures at such large public gatherings.
