Indore Woman Falls Victim to Elaborate Religious Con, Loses Mangalsutra
In a distressing incident in Indore, a 60-year-old woman was duped by a gang that exploited her religious sentiments through an elaborate fake ritual, resulting in the theft of her mangalsutra. The victim, identified as Padmavati Chauhan, was returning from a temple when the scam unfolded.
How the Scam Unfolded Step by Step
The incident began when a man approached Padmavati Chauhan and asked for an address. When she could not assist him, he requested water. Shortly after, another man joined and insisted on drinking water only from her hands, claiming she was "lucky".
They engaged her in conversation about her life and personal problems, cleverly asking questions and then repeating her answers to create an illusion of supernatural knowledge. To further build trust, they called a third man and made him walk 81 steps, alleging he had received divine darshan.
The gang then instructed Padmavati to follow the same procedure. She complied, walking 81 steps and chanting "Om" 11 times as directed. At this point, the men claimed her problems were connected to the mangalsutra she was wearing and asked her to place it in a pooja vessel as part of a purification ritual.
The Theft and Aftermath
After placing her mangalsutra in the vessel, Padmavati was told to walk ahead without looking back. As she moved away, two additional accomplices arrived on a motorcycle, swiftly took the vessel containing the jewelry, and fled the scene. When she returned, she realized she had been cheated and immediately reported the incident to authorities.
Police have registered a case and are actively reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify and trace the accused individuals. Officials have issued a public advisory, urging people to remain alert and avoid trusting strangers who make such supernatural claims or request participation in unsolicited rituals.
Broader Implications and Warnings
This incident highlights a growing trend of criminals using religious manipulation to target vulnerable individuals, particularly elderly women. Law enforcement emphasizes the importance of skepticism toward unsolicited approaches and recommends verifying the credentials of anyone claiming special spiritual powers.
Citizens are advised to report similar suspicious activities immediately to prevent further victimization. The investigation continues as police work to apprehend the gang responsible for this calculated deception.
