In a crackdown on illegal sand mining, the Karkala town police in Udupi district seized a tipper vehicle and detained two individuals on Monday. The action was taken against those involved in the unauthorized extraction and transportation of sand without valid permits.
Details of the Illegal Operation
The police reported that the incident originated in Irmugodu, Cherkady village, within Brahmavar taluk. Here, a man identified as Vincent Prakash D'Almeida, aged 54, allegedly extracted sand illegally from a flowing stream and stored it. This illegally procured sand was then loaded onto a tipper vehicle owned by Mohammed Irfan.
The vehicle, driven by 25-year-old Samyegd Jain from Mudaru village in Karkala taluk, was transporting the sand without any legal documentation. The illegal transport was en route from Banglegudde towards Pulkeri when law enforcement intervened.
Police Interception and Seizure
The interception was carried out by a team led by Karkala town Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Muralidhar Naik and his staff. The police successfully stopped the tipper near the Kabettu Attur Church gate in Kasaba village, Karkala taluk.
Upon inspection, authorities found that the vehicle was carrying approximately three units of illegally mined sand. Consequently, the police seized the tipper on the spot. Both the driver, Samyegd Jain, and the alleged mastermind behind the storage and loading, Vincent Prakash D'Almeida, were taken into custody.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The two detained individuals are facing charges related to the illegal mining and transport of sand. Police confirmed that the accused will be produced before the court to face legal proceedings for their alleged offences.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by the Udupi district police to curb the rampant issue of illegal sand mining, which poses significant environmental and legal challenges in the region. The seizure of the vehicle and the detention of the accused serve as a stern warning to others involved in similar unlawful activities.
