IIT-Bombay Hostel Raid Uncovers Live Bullets; Bihar Dropout Arrested

In a startling incident at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B), police have arrested a 23-year-old college dropout from Bihar after five live 7.65mm bullets were discovered in a student's hostel room. The arrest followed a security search triggered by a physical altercation between students on the campus.

Security Search Reveals Ammunition

The discovery occurred on February 19 when IIT-B security personnel, including the Quick Response Team (QRT) and vigilance staff, conducted a room search in Hostel Number 1. This action was initiated after a fight broke out between two students over an exchange of money, with some individuals reportedly smelling of alcohol. Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited on the IIT-Bombay campus, prompting the thorough inspection.

During the search, security teams found not only liquor bottles but also five live 7.65mm cartridges in the front pocket of a bag belonging to a first-year BTech student. The bullets, valued at approximately Rs 3,500, were immediately reported to the authorities.

Arrest and Investigation Details

The arrested individual, identified as Anand Chaudhary from Samastipur, Bihar, had arrived in Mumbai on February 12 to celebrate Valentine's Day with his girlfriend. He requested to stay as a guest in the IIT-B hostel with his childhood friend, the BTech student. Police allege that Chaudhary placed the bullets in his friend's bag on the same day he arrived.

According to police statements, the IITian friend was aware of the bullets in his bag but did not object, as such possession is considered normal in their hometown in Bihar. Investigators suspect the student may have intended to show off the ammunition to his roommates. On February 14, Chaudhary, his girlfriend, and the IITian went out for a movie and dinner before the friend returned alone to the hostel.

When Chaudhary returned to the hostel on February 19 to meet his friend, he was apprehended by IIT-B security and subsequently handed over to the Powai police. No firearm was found during the search, according to official reports.

Institute Response and Disciplinary Actions

In an official statement, IIT-Bombay administration clarified that the bullets were brought to the campus by a visitor of a student residing in the hostel. The institute emphasized that both individuals are childhood friends and that the incident came to light during the security response to the student altercation.

The statement detailed: "A detailed internal investigation was conducted by the chief security officer and his team, and the case was handed over to the police." It further confirmed that disciplinary action would be taken against those involved as per institute procedures.

The police complaint was filed by IIT-B security sub-inspector Amod Karanje, who documented the sequence of events leading to the discovery. This case highlights ongoing security challenges at educational institutions and raises concerns about campus safety protocols.
