Drivers using Hyderabad's PVNR Expressway need to watch their speed and lane discipline carefully. This warning comes as authorities plan to install new surveillance systems along the entire 11-kilometer stretch.
Safety Push After Accident Increase
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras with speed detection systems. This decision follows a concerning rise in accidents on the expressway.
Official data reveals accidents on the PVNR corridor doubled last year. The number jumped from five incidents in 2024 to thirteen in 2025. This total included four fatal accidents.
How the New System Will Work
The surveillance infrastructure will be positioned at every fifth pillar along the expressway. This placement ensures continuous monitoring across the entire elevated road.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) requested this safety upgrade. Regional Transport Commissioner K Ilambarithi communicated the need in a letter to the HMDA metropolitan commissioner.
Ilambarithi noted that similar ANPR cameras and speed enforcement systems are currently being installed on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). He stated these systems improve traffic monitoring and violation detection.
"In contrast, several arterial roads, radial corridors and high-traffic expressways within the HMDA area currently lack comparable automated enforcement infrastructure," Ilambarithi said.
He explained this absence leads to frequent speeding, signal violations and other unsafe driving behaviors. These actions result in road crashes that pose serious risks to commuters and pedestrians.
