Hyderabad: Mother, infant son die in suspected murder-suicide

A horrific incident of suspected murder-suicide has shaken the Hastinapuram area in Meerpet, Hyderabad. A 27-year-old woman allegedly poisoned her infant son before taking her own life at their residence. The tragedy unfolded on Friday, sending shockwaves through the community.

Sequence of a Tragedy: Harassment Allegations Surface

According to the Hyderabad police, the woman, identified as Sushmitha, first administered an unknown poisonous substance to her 11-month-old son, Ashwanth Nandan Reddy. She later ended her life. The incident came to light when her husband, Yashwanth Reddy, returned home from work. He discovered his wife's body hanging from a ceiling fan in the bedroom and their child lying dead.

A layer of profound grief was added when Sushmitha's 50-year-old mother, Lalitha, was found unconscious at the scene. She had reportedly also consumed poison upon discovering the deaths. Lalitha was immediately rushed to a hospital, where she remains under medical treatment. The exact substance she consumed is yet to be ascertained by investigators.

Family Alleges Harassment, Police File Case

The police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by Sushmitha's paternal uncle, Bitha Sanjeeva Reddy. The complaint alleges that Sushmitha was driven to take the extreme step due to persistent harassment by her husband, Yashwanth Reddy. Family members have claimed that Yashwanth frequently harassed Sushmitha, restricted her movements, and prevented her from interacting with others.

Adding to the heartbreak of the situation, the family had recently gone shopping for the child's upcoming first birthday, which was due in just a few days. The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the allegations and the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome.
