In a heartbreaking incident in Hubballi, a 15-year-old boy lost his life on Thursday after his electric scooter was struck by an Audi car driven by his friend. The accident occurred while the teenagers were attempting to film a reel, highlighting the dangers of reckless driving among minors.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The victim has been identified as Nimish Sangalad, a class 9 student from a private school in Mysuru and a resident of Laxmi Nagar, Hubballi. He had recently returned home after completing his class 9 exams for the Ugadi festival. According to family sources, Nimish and his friends planned to shoot a reel featuring speeding vehicles at the Shejawadkar plot, with Nimish allegedly intending to perform a crash stunt for the video.

Police Commissioner N Shashikumar, who rushed to the scene, provided crucial insights into the accident. He stated that Nimish was riding an electric scooter when the Audi approached from the opposite direction. "They aimed at shooting a sudden brake. However, Nimish's friend, who is also a teenager, failed to apply the brakes and lost control of the car. Nimish died on the spot," he explained. The commissioner emphasized the ongoing issue of minors driving vehicles, despite repeated awareness campaigns urging parents to prevent such activities.

Police Response and Investigation

Following the incident, the Hubballi North traffic police have registered a case and detained the teenage driver of the Audi for interrogation. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, including whether the minors had parental permission to use the vehicles. This case underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and parental vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.

Nimish Sangalad was the son of Veeresh Sangalad, a BJP functionary and developer, adding a layer of public attention to the incident. The community has expressed shock and grief over the loss of the young student, with many calling for increased safety measures for teenagers on the roads.

Broader Implications and Safety Concerns

This accident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with minors operating vehicles, especially in the context of social media trends like reel filming. Police Commissioner Shashikumar reiterated his appeal to parents: "Despite repeated awareness campaigns appealing to parents not to give vehicles to minors, some children are taking vehicles on the road without the knowledge of their parents." The incident has sparked discussions about:

  • The role of parental supervision in preventing underage driving.
  • The impact of social media challenges on teenage behavior.
  • The need for enhanced traffic safety education in schools.
