Karnataka High Court Seeks Government Response on PIL for New Building Land
The Karnataka High Court issued a notice to the state government on Monday. This action came in response to a public interest litigation or PIL. The PIL demands the allocation of at least thirty acres of land in central Bengaluru. The land is intended for constructing a new High Court building.
Background of the Court Order
This legal move follows a previous High Court order from October 2019. The court had directed the government to provide suitable land for the new building. The current PIL seeks to enforce that earlier directive.
Bengaluru resident Sharan Desai filed the petition. Desai also requested the court to direct the government to allocate funds for completing the project. The petitioner emphasized the urgent need for a new facility.
Concerns Over Proposed Alternative Location
The government had suggested using space in the Indhana Bhavan building at Anand Rao Circle. However, the petitioner argued this location presents significant challenges. It is approximately three to four kilometers away from the current High Court.
Shifting some court branches to this distant location may not be practical. The distance could create logistical problems for lawyers, litigants, and court staff.
Essential Requirements for the New Building
The PIL highlights several critical needs for the proposed High Court complex. The primary requirement is providing proper accommodation and offices for judges. Adequate court halls are also essential for conducting judicial proceedings.
Another major concern involves basic amenities and utilities. The new building must include sufficient space for parking vehicles. This is a crucial facility for the smooth functioning of the court.
The petitioner stressed that the current infrastructure is inadequate. A new, spacious building in a central location would address these pressing issues. The court's notice to the government marks a step forward in this long-standing matter.
