Police Inspector Dies a Hero in Surajkund Fair Swing Collapse Tragedy
In a tragic incident at the Surajkund International Crafts Festival, on-duty police inspector Jagdish Prasad, 58, lost his life while attempting to save people trapped in a collapsed giant swing. The swing, carrying about 19 riders, tilted and crashed to the ground around 6 pm on Saturday, leaving 11 individuals injured.
Bravery in the Face of Danger
Senior officers confirmed that Inspector Prasad displayed extraordinary courage by rushing to aid those caught in the wreckage. Despite his heroic efforts, he sustained severe injuries that proved fatal. "The officer showed immense bravery in trying to save those trapped, but tragically succumbed to his injuries," a senior police official stated.
A Distinguished Career Cut Short
Jagdish Prasad had served with distinction since joining the Haryana Armed Police in 1989. He was due to retire in March after completing 36 years of service. His dedication was recognized in 2019-20 when he was awarded the Police Medal by the Haryana governor.
State Honors and Family Support
Haryana Director General of Police Ajay Singhal announced a compensation package of ₹1 crore for the inspector's family and a government job for one family member. "Prasad will be accorded the status of a martyr," the DGP declared, praising the officer for making the ultimate sacrifice to save others.
Inspector Prasad is survived by his wife Sudha, two daughters Nidhi and Deepti, and a son Gaurav, all of whom are students and unmarried. The family resides in government accommodation at the Sonipat Police Lines. His sudden death has deeply shocked his native village of Dengra in Mathura district.
His brother Pradeep, a teacher who lives in the village with their parents Surajmal and Shanti Devi, shared: "We received the devastating news at 8 pm on Saturday. My brother was a decorated officer who received the Police Medal in 2019-20." Prasad's other brothers include Satish Chandra, who works at a chemical factory in Ballabgarh, and Chandrabhan Singh, employed at a motor company in Faridabad.
Fair Continues Amid Investigation
The 39th Surajkund International Crafts Festival will proceed on Sunday, though the swing area remains closed pending investigation. District administration officials have formed a committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner to investigate the accident. A case has been registered against the swing vendor.
Haryana Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma provided reassurance, stating that all injured individuals are now out of danger and receiving appropriate medical care.
A Troubled History of Swing Accidents
This tragic incident marks the third serious accident involving swings at the Surajkund fair, according to PTI reports:
- 2002: A young man died in a swing accident, leading to temporary suspension of swing rides.
- 2019: Another accident injured a young man, resulting in another suspension period.
- 2024: Saturday's fatal collapse that claimed Inspector Prasad's life.
Officials acknowledged that swings were reinstated considering the revenue they generate for the fair. They emphasized that strict regulations govern swing installations, requiring daily safety inspections to prevent such tragedies.
