Haryana's newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP), Ajay Singhal, wasted no time in setting the agenda for the state's police force. A day after formally assuming command, he convened his first comprehensive review meeting with senior officers across Haryana on Friday, aiming to bolster the state's law-and-order machinery.
Major Focus on Women's Safety and District-Level Challenges
In a nearly three-hour-long video conference attended by over 700 senior functionaries, including ADGPs, police commissioners, Range IGs, and superintendents of police, DGP Singhal placed a sharp emphasis on the safety of women and children. He directed the entire force to ensure strict tracking and thorough investigation of all complaints concerning missing girls and children statewide.
The DGP undertook a detailed, district-by-district review of the ground-level law-and-order situation, seeking inputs on key local challenges. He directed all districts to prepare practical, result-oriented, and time-bound action plans to address these issues, with each district required to submit its plan within two days in a prescribed format. These plans must cover critical areas like crime control, traffic management, narcotics, cybercrime, extortion cases, and security arrangements.
Push for Professional Policing and Zero Tolerance for Corruption
Singhal emphasized that while Haryana Police works diligently, evolving challenges demand a more professional, proactive, and responsive approach. "Policing is known to all of you — now our goal is to transform it into professional policing," he stated. He instructed police commissioners and Range IGs to hold regular reviews with SPs and field officers to identify bottlenecks and ensure timely solutions.
Making his stance unequivocally clear, the DGP declared that zero tolerance towards corruption would be the cornerstone of his leadership. He acknowledged every officer as part of the Haryana Police family but warned that the misconduct of a few tarnishes the image of the entire force. Such elements, he asserted, would be dealt with strictly as per the law.
Intensified Action on Crime and Capacity Building
The review meeting also saw firm directives for intensified action against a spectrum of criminal activities. DGP Singhal called for a crackdown on persons carrying illegal weapons, traffic bottlenecks, the illegal liquor trade, drug trafficking, gangster networks, and property-related crimes.
To maintain effective crime control, he stressed the need for a multi-pronged strategy: strengthening the intelligence network, enhancing technical capabilities, improving capacity building, and ensuring robust field-level policing. This comprehensive approach underscores the new police chief's intent to address law and order issues at their roots before they escalate, recognizing that these challenges vary significantly from one district to another.
