Haridwar Youth Arrested for Alleged Murder Over Mobile Phone Ownership Dispute
In a shocking incident from Haridwar district, a 20-year-old man was arrested on Monday from Laksar for allegedly strangling his friend to death following a violent dispute over the ownership of a newly purchased mobile phone. The arrest has sent ripples through the local community, highlighting how trivial disagreements can escalate into tragic outcomes.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to police reports, the accused, identified as Rohit, had accompanied the victim, Sunny, a resident of Rasoolpur Kankerkhata village near Laksar, and another friend named Raja to Sultanpur town on January 27. During this trip, Rohit allegedly used Sunny's Aadhaar card and money to purchase a mobile phone on an EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) basis, setting the stage for the subsequent conflict.
After returning from Sultanpur, the trio consumed alcohol together. Raja departed after some time, leaving Sunny and Rohit alone. The two then purchased another bottle of liquor and proceeded to nearby sugarcane fields. It was in this secluded setting that an argument erupted over the ownership of the newly acquired mobile phone.
The Tragic Turn of Events
In a fit of rage during the heated altercation, Rohit allegedly strangled Sunny to death. Following the act, he concealed the body in the sugarcane field in an attempt to evade detection. The incident remained undiscovered for several days, adding to the gravity of the crime.
Sunny's mother grew concerned when he failed to return home and lodged a missing person complaint at the Laksar police station on January 30. This prompted the police to register a case and initiate an investigation into his disappearance.
Police Investigation and Arrest
During the course of the investigation, authorities identified Rohit as a suspect. Upon interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crime. Acting on his disclosure, the police recovered Sunny's body from the sugarcane field in his native village.
"The accused confessed to the crime. Acting on his disclosure, we recovered the victim's body from a field in his native village," stated the police. They added that further legal proceedings are currently underway to ensure justice is served in this distressing case.
This incident underscores the severe consequences of disputes over material possessions and the dangers of alcohol-fueled violence. The local community in Roorkee and surrounding areas has been left in shock, with many calling for greater awareness and preventive measures to curb such tragic events.
