Land Dispute Erupts in Violence in Haridwar Village, BJP Leader's Brother Injured in Shooting

A routine land measurement operation in a Haridwar village descended into chaos and violence on Wednesday, resulting in a shooting incident that left one person injured. The clash occurred in Panjanhedi village under the jurisdiction of the Kankhal police station, highlighting simmering tensions over land ownership in the region.

Revenue Team Visit Sparks Violent Confrontation

The incident unfolded when a revenue team arrived at the village to conduct land measurements following complaints lodged by local activist Atul Chauhan. According to police reports, Atul Chauhan had accused BJP functionary and zila panchayat vice-president Amit Chauhan of illegally occupying government land and converting agricultural plots into residential colonies.

What began as an administrative verification process quickly escalated into a heated confrontation between the two opposing groups. Witnesses reported that tensions mounted during the measurement activities, eventually boiling over into a physical altercation.

Shooting Incident and Injuries Reported

During the scuffle, Atul Chauhan allegedly discharged his licensed pistol, striking Sachin Chauhan, the 30-year-old brother of BJP functionary Amit Chauhan. Sachin sustained gunshot wounds and was immediately transported to a higher medical center for treatment. Medical authorities have confirmed that his condition is currently stable.

Another individual identified as Krishnapal received minor injuries to his hand during the violent exchange. The presence of firearms during what was supposed to be a routine administrative procedure has raised serious concerns about security protocols during such operations.

Political Connections and Conflicting Narratives

The incident gains additional significance due to the political connections involved. Amit Chauhan, who serves as vice-president of the zila panchayat and is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, was reportedly present at the site when the violence erupted. His brother Sachin became the primary victim of the shooting.

Meanwhile, social organization Matri Sadan Ashram has entered the fray, extending support to Atul Chauhan and submitting a formal written complaint to authorities. The ashram representatives have presented a counter-narrative, claiming that Atul Chauhan acted in self-defense after being assaulted by Amit Chauhan and his associates.

Police Investigation and Allegations of Inaction

City Superintendent of Police Abhay Singh confirmed that a case is being registered regarding the incident. Police authorities have stated that all versions of events are being thoroughly examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Matri Sadan Ashram representatives have leveled serious allegations against local law enforcement, claiming police inaction despite prior requests for protection during the land measurement process. These accusations add another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation.

As the investigation progresses, authorities face the challenging task of unraveling conflicting accounts while maintaining peace in the tense village community. The incident underscores the potentially explosive nature of land disputes in the region and the importance of proper security arrangements during sensitive administrative operations.
