In a significant breakthrough, the Gujarat Police have finally apprehended a hardened criminal who had been evading capture for close to twenty years. The arrest marks the culmination of an intense, state-wide operation targeting fugitives and parole jumpers.
The State-Wide Crackdown on Fugitives
Acting on specific directives from the state police headquarters, the State Monitoring Cell (SMC) intensified its efforts to track down individuals declared absconding. Senior SMC officials directly supervised the operation, deploying multiple teams that leveraged a combination of technical surveillance and human intelligence networks to locate their targets.
The Dramatic 2006 Escape and a Long Chase
The arrested individual, a 53-year-old man, was originally wanted in a robbery case filed at Ahmedabad's Navrangpura police station in 2006. His flight from justice, however, was particularly audacious. While lodged at Borsad sub-jail and being transported to a court in Ahmedabad under police escort, he allegedly spiked the buttermilk given to the escort personnel with an intoxicating substance. After the personnel fell unconscious, he made his escape.
Following this incident, the Nadiad Town police station registered a separate case against him. A local court in Nadiad subsequently issued a non-bailable warrant under Section 70 of the CrPC. Despite these measures, the accused managed to remain at large for years, moving between states.
Operation Culminates in Bihar Arrest
The long-running manhunt reached its climax when the SMC received a crucial tip-off. Intelligence indicated that the fugitive was hiding in his native place in the Saharsa district of Bihar. Acting swiftly on this information, a dedicated SMC team traveled to Bihar, detained the accused, and brought him back to Gujarat.
He was formally arrested at 1:30 PM on Monday and subsequently handed over to the Nadiad Town police for the next stages of legal proceedings. Police records reveal the gravity of his criminal past, labeling him a habitual offender with a long list of serious charges across multiple states.
His criminal dossier includes multiple cases of:
- Murder
- Robbery
- Theft
- Assault
These cases are registered not just in Gujarat, but also in Maharashtra and Karnataka, painting a picture of a seasoned criminal operating across state lines.
This successful arrest underscores the Gujarat police's renewed focus on bringing long-term absconders to justice and serves as a warning to other fugitives still at large.
