Gurgaon Traffic Police Impound Motorcycle with 41 Unpaid Challans Worth Rs 5 Lakh

In a significant enforcement action, the Gurgaon traffic police impounded a motorcycle on Thursday near the Dundahera Border. The vehicle had a staggering 41 pending traffic challans, amounting to approximately Rs 5 lakh in unpaid fines. This action was part of a special drive targeting vehicles with outstanding penalties that have remained unpaid for over 90 days.

Details of the Seized Vehicle and Violations

The motorcycle, bearing Haryana license plate HR13J6809, is registered under the name Sandeep. However, at the time of the enforcement check, it was being operated by a man identified as Sumit from Jind. The traffic police stopped the vehicle during routine checking conducted by zonal officer ASI Ashok and his team.

The list of violations associated with the 41 challans is extensive and serious:

  • Driving without a valid license
  • Absence of proper vehicle insurance
  • Lack of a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
  • No High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP)
  • Driving without wearing a helmet

Since all these challans had crossed the 90-day payment deadline and the substantial fine remained unsettled, authorities exercised their power under Section 167(8) of the Motor Vehicles Act to impound the motorcycle.

Official Statements and Enforcement Drive Context

The special enforcement operation was conducted under the direction of Rajesh Moham, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic). Vikas Verma, the traffic police spokesperson, emphasized the seriousness with which such cases are being handled.

"During routine checks, drivers are informed about the number of outstanding challans against their vehicles and are strongly urged to clear their dues immediately," Verma stated. "Vehicles found with excessive pending challans will continue to face strict action, including detention and impounding, if fines remain unpaid."

This incident is part of a broader, month-long special enforcement initiative by the Gurgaon traffic police. In January alone, authorities issued challans to 2,896 motorists specifically for wrong-lane driving and improper lane changes, imposing fines totaling Rs 26.1 lakh.

Educational Campaigns and Traffic Management

Beyond enforcement, the traffic police are conducting regular campaigns and workshops aimed at educating various stakeholders about traffic discipline. These initiatives target truck and transport union members, commercial vehicle drivers, bus and school bus operators, company drivers, and auto-rickshaw operators.

The focus of these educational efforts is to emphasize the importance of lane discipline and strict adherence to traffic rules. Officials explain that lane markings are specifically designed to segregate traffic efficiently:

  1. Heavy vehicles should use the left lane
  2. Light vehicles should occupy the middle lane
  3. The right lane is reserved exclusively for overtaking maneuvers

This case serves as a stark reminder to all vehicle owners and operators in Gurgaon about the consequences of ignoring traffic violations and accumulating unpaid fines. The traffic police have made it clear that they will not hesitate to take stringent measures against those who repeatedly flout traffic regulations and fail to settle their financial penalties within the stipulated timeframe.
