In a significant crackdown, Gurgaon police have dismantled an extortion racket that was preying on street vendors and shopkeepers in the Sadar area. The operation led to the arrest of two suspects, with authorities intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in this criminal network.
Complaint Reveals Months of Harassment and Threats
The case came to light when Ranjit Kumar Mahto, a paan shop owner, filed a formal complaint at the Sadar police station on Friday. Mahto, a native of Jharkhand who has resided in Jharsa for approximately seven to eight years, alleged that a group of locals had been systematically extorting money from him for several months. He detailed how the accused, identified as Nitin, Himanshu, Sonu, and their associates, demanded a monthly payment of Rs 2,000. The threats escalated to include warnings of death if he refused to comply or attempted to continue his business without paying the protection money.
Background of the Victim and Illegal Demands
Mahto had legally set up his kiosk on municipal land behind Unitech Cyber Park in Sector 39, after obtaining the necessary licence from the municipal corporation. Despite this official authorization, the accused allegedly asserted dominance over the area, using fear and intimidation to force him into making regular payments. This highlights a troubling pattern of street-level bullying that undermines the livelihoods of hardworking vendors.
Police Action and Arrests
Following the registration of the First Information Report (FIR), the Sector 39 crime branch team, under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Mohit, sprang into immediate action. Within hours of the complaint, two key suspects were apprehended. Nitin Kaushik and Himanshu Swami, both residents of Jharsa, were taken into custody. Investigations revealed that Nitin has a substantial criminal history, with eight previous cases registered against him, including charges of extortion, assault, and attempt to murder. Another suspect, Shubham, who is currently absconding, is linked to nine criminal cases, indicating a pattern of organized criminal activity.

Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan confirmed that raids are actively underway to arrest the remaining accused individuals.
