Gurgaon Hit-and-Run Tragedy: Cyclist Succumbs to Injuries After Family's Frantic Search
In a heartbreaking incident in Gurgaon, a 52-year-old cyclist, Radheshyam Gupta, lost his life after being critically injured in a hit-and-run accident. The tragedy unfolded on Monday evening in Udyog Vihar Phase 1, just minutes from his workplace, leaving his family in despair as they struggled to locate him for nearly two hours.
Accident Details and Initial Confusion
Radheshyam Gupta, a master cutter at an export house, was cycling home around 5:30 PM when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle. The impact caused severe head injuries, but the circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear. While some witnesses claimed a scooter was involved, Gupta's brother, Ghanshyam, alleged it was an "unidentified vehicle" that fled the scene.
Initially, bystanders informed the family that the perpetrator had placed Gupta in a mini-truck, promising to take him for medical treatment. However, this led to a dead end as relatives began their search, unable to trace him or the vehicle.
Family's Desperate Hunt Across Hospitals
The family first learned of the accident when Gupta's wife called him while preparing for a religious trip to Ayodhya. A stranger answered, revealing he had found the phone on the road and that an accident had occurred. This sparked a frantic search that involved contacting colleagues, checking with local tea stall vendors, and visiting the police station.
Ghanshyam recounted the ordeal, stating, "We searched 20 to 25 hospitals, but that led nowhere." The family split up to cover more ground, and around 7:30 PM, Gupta's wife and another relative finally discovered him lying injured near Jagdamba Electricals on the Old Delhi-Gurgaon road. By then, his blood had dried, and hopes were raised that he might survive.
Medical Treatment and Fatal Outcome
Gupta was rushed to Yadav Hospital and later transferred to Manipal Hospital for advanced care. Police reports noted he was brought in "unconscious and unresponsive" with a serious head injury. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated early Tuesday morning, and he passed away at 5:11 AM.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Authorities have registered a case under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving) and 106 (causing death by rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Udyog Vihar police station. A senior officer confirmed, "Teams have visited the spot and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the vehicle involved." The investigation is ongoing to bring the culprit to justice.
Family's Grief and Past Trauma
Originally from Ayodhya, Gupta had been living in Palam Vihar with his family for several years. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. The loss has reopened old wounds for the family, who tragically lost Gupta's elder son in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh in 2020. Ghanshyam lamented, "Accidents are not leaving our family," highlighting the recurring trauma they endure.
This incident underscores urgent concerns about road safety and emergency response in urban areas, calling for stricter enforcement and better infrastructure to prevent such tragedies in the future.
