Gurgaon guard held for embezzling Rs 50 lakh from liquor store

In a significant case of breach of trust, a personal security officer (PSO) employed at a liquor store in Gurgaon has been arrested for allegedly absconding with a substantial sum of Rs 50 lakh that was entrusted to him by his employer. The Gurgaon police have successfully recovered most of the stolen money, amounting to Rs 49.5 lakh, along with the vehicle used in the commission of the crime.

The Accused and The Initial Complaint

The individual arrested in connection with this financial fraud has been identified as Jai Pratap Singh, a resident of Belhar village in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district. According to the police report, the incident unfolded on December 10, 2025. Singh, who had been working at the Discovery liquor store in Sector 57 for the past decade, was given a critical task by his employer.

He was instructed to deliver the cash, a total of Rs 50 lakh, to a person in Delhi. Singh left the store's office around 12:30 pm in a Maruti Suzuki S-Presso car. However, he never reached the intended destination in Delhi. As evening approached, his mobile phone was switched off, raising immediate alarms.

Swift Police Action and Recovery

The employer, sensing foul play, promptly filed a formal complaint at the Sector-56 police station, leading to the registration of a case. A dedicated team from the Sector 43 Crime Branch, under the leadership of Inspector Narendra Kumar Sharma, took over the investigation. Utilizing technical surveillance and field intelligence, the team tracked down and apprehended Singh from Sector 56 in Gurgaon itself.

During interrogation, Singh disclosed his actions after leaving the store. He confessed to driving towards Delhi, switching off his phone to avoid detection, and then parking the car in an MCD parking lot near Batra Hospital. He hid the bag containing the cash in the vehicle's boot. Subsequently, he travelled to the pilgrimage towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh for a leisure trip, during which he destroyed his mobile phone and spent approximately Rs 50,000 from the stolen money.

Motivation and Judicial Process

Police officials stated that Singh revealed his long-term plan was to invest the embezzled funds into establishing a fruit orchard in Himachal Pradesh. Acting on the information provided by the accused, the police team recovered the Maruti S-Presso vehicle and the remaining cash, totaling Rs 49.5 lakh, from the same parking lot in Delhi.

Jai Pratap Singh was produced before a local court on Wednesday, December 18, 2025, and has been remanded to judicial custody. The Gurgaon Police have confirmed that further investigation into the matter is currently underway to explore all angles of the case.

This incident highlights a serious case of employee fraud within the retail sector in Gurgaon. The prompt action by the complainant and the efficient follow-up by the crime branch led to the swift arrest of the accused and the recovery of almost the entire stolen amount, preventing a major financial loss for the business owner.
