A 25-year-old woman, who was brutally gangraped in a moving vehicle in Gurgaon last month, successfully identified her two alleged attackers during an official identification parade held inside Neemka Jail on Thursday. This critical development paves the way for police to seek police remand of the accused for further interrogation.
Identification Parade Conducted Under Magistrate's Supervision
According to police officials, the identification process was conducted under the direct supervision of a duty magistrate. The two accused men were made to stand in a line-up among ten other individuals with similar physical builds. The survivor, when asked by the magistrate to point out the perpetrators, identified both men immediately. The jail superintendent and the investigating officer were present as witnesses during this crucial procedure.
Previously, the accused had been sent directly to judicial custody without police remand due to the pending identification parade. With this formality now completed, the Gurgaon police will move to obtain their remand for detailed questioning and evidence collection.
Brutal Attack in a Vehicle Posing as Ambulance
The horrific incident took place on the night of December 30. The survivor, who was returning home amid dense fog, sought a lift when she saw a van approaching. Trusting the vehicle because it appeared to be an ambulance, she got in. The family of the woman has alleged that the crime was committed inside this ambulance.
Instead of helping her, the two men inside the van raped and brutalised her, inflicting grievous injuries. She suffered serious injuries to her face, eyes, and shoulders. Around 3 am, near Raja Chowk in SGM Nagar, the suspects pushed her out of the moving vehicle and fled.
Aftermath and Legal Action
Despite her injuries, the woman managed to contact her sister, who then took her to a hospital. After initial treatment, doctors referred her to a hospital in Delhi. However, the family chose to admit her to a private medical facility in NIT, Faridabad.
The Crime Branch later seized the Eeco van used in the crime after police detained the suspects. An FIR was registered at the Kotwali police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 70(1) for gang rape, 351(3) for criminal intimidation, and 3(5) for an act done by several persons.
The survivor's personal life adds another layer of tragedy to the case. She has been living separately from her husband, who is based in Delhi. The couple has two young children—a four-year-old son and a seven-year-old daughter—who are currently staying with their maternal grandmother. The woman is one of five sisters.
A senior police officer involved in the investigation assured that the force is committed to securing justice. "We will ensure the culprits get punished and thus are taking all the necessary steps and collecting the required evidence for the same," the officer stated.
