Police in Gurgaon swiftly arrested a cab driver within hours of an incident where he allegedly misbehaved with a female passenger, hurled abuses at her, and abandoned her on a deserted stretch late in the evening. The arrest was made on Sunday based on the woman's complaint to the police helpline.
Details of the Harrowing Incident
The unsettling event took place on December 15. The woman had booked a Rapido cab around 6 pm after leaving her office. According to the police, the situation escalated when the driver, identified as Pankaj (22) from Bahni Maharajpur in Rohtak, began playing loud music inside the vehicle.
Despite the woman's repeated requests to lower the volume, the driver refused. In a video statement, the complainant recounted the driver's aggressive response. "I requested him to lower the volume... the third time he said, 'Is this your father's car? You will tell me what to do?'" she stated.
Driver's Aggressive Escalation and Abandonment
The confrontation took a dangerous turn when the driver allegedly became more hostile. "He said, 'Now I'll show you,' and started driving somewhere else. My hands were literally shaking," the woman described. Instead of taking her to the intended destination, the driver stopped the car on an unfamiliar and deserted road, forcing her to get out.
She further claimed that the driver also alighted from the vehicle and started looking at her with wrong intentions, making her feel profoundly unsafe. An investigating officer confirmed that the argument originated over the issues of talking on the phone and the music volume, which preceded the driver's subsequent actions.
Swift Police Action and Legal Consequences
Acting promptly on the distress call, the Gurgaon police located and arrested the accused driver, Pankaj, from the Sector 50 area. The cab involved in the incident was also seized by the authorities.
Following the woman's formal complaint, an FIR was registered at the Sector 50 police station. The case has been filed under significant sections of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically sections 77 (voyeurism) and 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman). Police officials have stated that further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
