Gujarat Assembly Debate on Rs 3,727 Crore Drug Seizures

Gujarat Assembly Witnesses Heated Debate Over Massive Drug Seizures

In a significant revelation, the Gujarat government announced in the state assembly on Wednesday that law enforcement authorities have seized drugs worth a staggering Rs 3,727 crore over the past two years. This disclosure ignited a fiery debate between ruling party and opposition MLAs, particularly focusing on drug-related activities in Jamnagar and Kutch districts.

Detailed Breakdown of Seizures and Cases

The discussion was initiated by AAP MLA Hemant Ahir, who raised concerns about drug seizures in Jamnagar and Kutch. In response, Minister of State for Law and Justice Kaushik Vekariya provided specific data, stating that 135 cases were registered in these two districts alone, with action taken against 306 accused involved in drug seizures valued at Rs 244 crore. Vekariya emphasized that these figures are not mere statistics but reflect the courageous efforts of police officers who conduct daring operations in challenging conditions.

He further highlighted that, according to the National Crime Records Bureau 2023 report, Gujarat registered 561 crimes with a crime rate of 0.8%, which he claimed is the lowest in the country. To contrast this, Vekariya noted that Punjab recorded over 11,500 crimes with a rate of 37.6%, and Kerala had 30,697 crimes with an 85.7% rate, mentioning that AAP governs Punjab and the Left Democratic Front leads Kerala.

Political Tensions and Broader Enforcement Actions

The minister's comparisons sparked protests from AAP MLAs, leading Vekariya to clarify that his remarks were not intended as political attacks but as factual statements. Despite Speaker Shankar Chaudhary urging against politicizing the discussion, Ahir argued for equal recognition of police efforts across states, suggesting that if Gujarat police are commended, Punjab police should also be acknowledged for their drug seizures.

Ahir also inquired about actions taken against ships used for drug transportation. Vekariya responded by detailing statewide enforcement, revealing that 1,646 cases were registered, resulting in the seizure of approximately 41,000 kg of drugs worth Rs 3,727 crore. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi cited examples of government action, such as demolishing a drug-linked house in Kutch and converting it into a police station, set to be inaugurated soon. He explained that Gujarat police employ a "top-to-bottom" approach, targeting all individuals in the drug supply chain.

Opposition Concerns and Calls for Accountability

Congress MLA Amit Chavda expressed deep concern over Gujarat becoming a hub for drug landing and consumption, with reports of open ganja cultivation emerging. As the state Congress chief, he questioned the effectiveness of arrests, asking how many of those detained were masterminds versus low-level peddlers in the drug networks. This underscores ongoing challenges in tackling the root causes of narcotics trafficking in the region.
