In a shocking development from Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district, police have made swift arrests in the brutal murder of an elderly couple. The authorities have taken into custody two individuals, one of whom is the grandson of the victims, for allegedly strangling the octogenarian pair to death in a cold-blooded robbery.
Gruesome Discovery and Immediate Police Response
The tragic incident came to light on Saturday morning when a relative, Chandaram, visited the home of Lakharam (80) and his wife Reshma (78) in Bhil Basti, located within the Mohangarh police station jurisdiction. To his horror, he found Lakharam's lifeless body lying in the courtyard and Reshma deceased inside a room.
Senior Superintendent of Police Abhishek Shivhare confirmed that preliminary investigations indicate the couple were smothered and strangled during the night. The perpetrators made off with valuable items including Lakharam's gold locket, Reshma's gold chain and earrings, her silver anklets, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Comprehensive Investigation Launched
Following the discovery, authorities registered a formal case at the Mohangarh police station and mobilized multiple specialized teams under senior officers. The investigation saw participation from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), mobile forensic units, dog squads, and dedicated crime scene teams who meticulously examined the location.
Police employed both traditional intelligence gathering and modern technical evidence collection methods. They also established crucial coordination with the Kotwali police station in Jaisalmer city to track down the suspects.
Arrests and Motive Revealed
Through diligent investigative work, police identified and apprehended the accused within hours of the crime. The arrested individuals are Suresh (19), who is the grandson of the deceased couple, and Yogesh (24), a relative of the family.
Investigators revealed that the two men planned the heinous act due to severe financial distress. Suresh had previously lived with his grandparents for approximately six months, giving him intimate knowledge of where they kept their valuables and the layout of their home.
Chilling Details of the Crime
According to police statements, the accused traveled from Jaisalmer city to the couple's residence, consuming alcohol along the way. They arrived late at night and allegedly murdered Lakharam while he slept outside in the courtyard. Subsequently, they entered the house and strangled Reshma before fleeing back to Jaisalmer city with the stolen items.
The Kotwali police station team successfully traced and arrested both suspects shortly after the crime was reported. Authorities are currently making concerted efforts to recover the stolen jewellery and cash, with further investigation actively underway to uncover all aspects of this tragic case.
Background of the Victims
The murdered couple, Lakharam and Reshma, were members of the Bhil community and originally hailed from Pakistan before settling in India. Their advanced age and vulnerability made this crime particularly disturbing to the local community and investigators alike.
