The National Board of Examinations (NBE) has officially announced that the NEET PG 2026 examination will be conducted on August 30, 2026. Along with the date, the board has released a revised paper pattern that will bring significant changes to the test structure.
Revised Exam Pattern Details
The new pattern reduces the total number of questions from 300 to 250, all of which will be multiple-choice. The exam duration remains three hours. The marking scheme has been updated: each correct answer will now award 4 marks, while each incorrect answer will deduct 1 mark. Unanswered questions will receive no marks.
The syllabus remains unchanged, covering all pre- and para-clinical subjects as per the Graduate Medical Education Regulations. The revised pattern aims to reduce the cognitive load while maintaining assessment rigor, according to an NBE official.
Key Changes and Impact
The reduction in questions is expected to allow candidates more time per question, potentially reducing stress. However, the increased negative marking for wrong answers emphasizes accuracy. Dr. Ramesh Kumar, a medical education expert, stated, "The revised pattern will test depth of knowledge rather than speed."
Eligibility criteria remain the same: candidates must possess an MBBS degree and have completed their internship by March 31, 2026. The application process is expected to begin in May 2026.
Preparation Strategies
With 50 fewer questions, aspirants should focus on conceptual clarity and practice with mock tests that simulate the new pattern. Many coaching institutes have already updated their materials to align with the changes.
The NBE has also clarified that there will be no change in the reservation policy or the number of seats. The exam will be conducted in computer-based mode across multiple cities in India.
