In a distressing incident in Nagpur, a senior citizen fell victim to a brazen theft during an auto rickshaw ride, losing valuables worth a substantial sum. The Ganeshpeth police have now launched a manhunt for the unidentified culprits.
The Unfolding of the Auto Rickshaw Theft
The complainant, identified as 64-year-old Rekharam Burde, a resident of Dighori, had boarded an auto rickshaw on December 16. He was accompanied by two other men in the vehicle. The journey proceeded seemingly without incident until Burde reached his destination and discovered the shocking crime.
Upon arriving home, Burde found that his bag had been torn open. A thorough check revealed that precious items were missing. The stolen goods included gold and silver ornaments, along with cash amounting to ₹6,500. The total estimated value of the loss is a staggering ₹5.5 lakh.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the discovery, Rekharam Burde immediately approached the Ganeshpeth police station to file a formal complaint. The police have registered a case against unknown accused persons based on the victim's account.
Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the sequence of events. The focus is on piecing together the details of the auto ride, identifying the two men who shared the ride with Burde, and tracing the stolen jewellery. The police are likely examining CCTV footage from the route and area to gather clues about the perpetrators.
A Cautionary Tale for Commuters
This incident serves as a serious reminder, especially for elderly citizens and those carrying valuables, to exercise heightened caution while using public transport. Theft in crowded or confined spaces like auto rickshaws is an unfortunate reality in urban areas.
Authorities often advise commuters to:
- Keep bags and valuables secure and within sight at all times.
- Avoid displaying expensive jewellery or large sums of cash during travel.
- Be aware of fellow passengers and any suspicious behaviour.
- Note down vehicle registration details when possible.
The Ganeshpeth police have assured that the investigation is active and ongoing. They are pursuing all leads to apprehend the individuals responsible for this significant theft and recover the stolen property.
