Godman Approaches High Court to Quash Pocso Case Amid Police Manhunt
In a dramatic legal move, self-proclaimed godman Mallikarjun Muthya has approached the Kalaburagi bench of the Karnataka High Court, seeking to quash the Pocso case registered against him. This petition comes even as police authorities continue their relentless efforts to trace and arrest the accused, who remains absconding from an undisclosed location.
Petition Claims Lack of Parental Complaint
In his petition, Muthya has contended that the parents of the alleged minor victim did not lodge any formal complaint. He argues that the First Information Report (FIR) was registered suo motu by the police, implying an overreach in legal procedures. The plea was reportedly filed from a hidden location, highlighting the ongoing evasion by the accused.
Case Origins in Viral Video and Official Complaint
The case was registered at the Gogi police station based on a complaint filed by the Child Development Project Officer of Shahapur taluk. This action followed a video that went viral on social media, allegedly showing Muthya misbehaving with a minor girl. The footage sparked widespread public outrage, prompting immediate legal intervention.
Superintendent of Police Prithvi Shankar emphasized that the investigation is being conducted strictly in accordance with the law. "A case was registered under the Pocso Act, and all aspects are being thoroughly examined. Our efforts are focused on securing the accused and recording statements from all concerned parties," the SP stated, underscoring the procedural rigor.
Child Rights Commission Takes Suo Motu Cognisance
The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident. Commission chairman Shashidhar Kosambe confirmed that the panel has directed district police to conduct a comprehensive probe and submit a detailed report at the earliest. This step reflects the heightened scrutiny on child protection issues in the state.
Supporters Rally and Allegations of Conspiracy
Meanwhile, supporters of Muthya gathered at his mutt, demanding the withdrawal of the case within two days. They alleged a conspiracy to defame the godman, with one devotee warning, "If the case is not withdrawn, we will stage protests across the district." Similar sentiments were echoed by MLC Thippannappa Kamakanur, who claimed the entire episode appears to be an attempt to tarnish Muthya's reputation.
The parents of the child involved have added to the controversy by claiming that the viral footage was doctored. "We are simply sharing a happy moment with Muthya, and there was nothing inappropriate in his behaviour," they asserted, challenging the authenticity of the evidence.
Police Appeal for Calm Amid Ongoing Investigation
Police authorities have appealed for public calm, reiterating that the matter is under active investigation. They assured that any action taken will be based solely on evidence and legal provisions, aiming to maintain order while pursuing justice. The situation remains tense as legal and social dynamics continue to unfold.
