Fatal Crash in Goa: New Mini Cooper Claims Life of Young Woman
A devastating road accident in Dona Paula, Goa, has resulted in the tragic death of a 23-year-old woman and left her 26-year-old male colleague with serious injuries. The incident occurred when a brand-new Mini Cooper, driven by the son of a local businessman, collided with the two-wheeler on which both victims were traveling.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The accident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. According to police reports, Darius Myles Dias, the 22-year-old son of businessman Andrew Dias, was driving the temporarily registered Mini Cooper from Dona Paula towards Bambolim. The vehicle struck a two-wheeler from behind as the riders were crossing the road near the Taj Convention Centre junction.
The impact was so severe that the airbags in the Mini Cooper deployed instantly. The two-wheeler was thrown over 50 meters from the point of collision before coming to a stop. The luxury car sustained extensive damage to its bonnet, headlamp, bumper, and front windshield. Notably, the ceremonial ribbon tied to the door handle—indicating the vehicle was newly purchased—remained intact.
Victims and Aftermath
The deceased has been identified as Diksha Gopal Parwadkar, a 23-year-old native of Karnataka who was working as an apprentice. Her injured colleague is D Arunkumar, a 26-year-old resident of Margao. Both were employed at the front office of the Taj Convention Centre and were returning home after their work shift when the tragedy unfolded.
Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene where the speeding car approached the junction just as the two-wheeler was crossing. "Both the rider and pillion rider were flung into the air and fell violently onto the road," one witness recounted. Following the collision, both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, Diksha succumbed to her injuries, while Arunkumar remains hospitalized and is undergoing medical care.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
Panaji Police have arrested Darius Myles Dias, who was present in the car at the time of the accident. Police Inspector Vijaykumar Chodankar confirmed that a First Information Report has been registered under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence.
Initial investigations revealed that a preliminary alcohol test conducted on Darius returned negative results. However, authorities have collected blood samples for comprehensive medical testing to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. "The blood test results are currently awaited," stated PI Chodankar, emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing.
Community Concerns and Safety Demands
In the wake of this tragedy, local residents have voiced serious concerns about road safety in the area. One community member highlighted that the stretch between Dona Paula and Bambolim has become notorious as a racing track for young drivers. "The government must install speed breakers at this spot to prevent such accidents in the future," the local demanded, calling for immediate measures to curb speeding and enhance pedestrian safety.
This fatal accident underscores the urgent need for improved traffic management and stricter enforcement of speed limits in Goa's busy corridors, particularly in areas frequented by both vehicles and pedestrians.
