A 19-year-old girl from Haveri district in Karnataka has been reported missing since July 10, sparking allegations of a love jihad conspiracy by her family. The girl, a resident of Byadagi town, left home without informing her parents and has not returned. Her family has filed a complaint with the Byadagi police, accusing a Muslim man of luring her away under the pretext of love.
Family Alleges Love Jihad
The girl's father, a local farmer, stated that his daughter had been in contact with a man named Irfan from a neighboring village. He claimed that Irfan had promised to marry her and convert her to Islam. The family believes this is a case of love jihad, a term used by right-wing groups to describe alleged forced conversions through romantic relationships. The father said, 'We have been searching for her everywhere. We suspect Irfan has taken her to another state.'
Police Investigation Underway
The Byadagi police have registered a missing person case and are investigating. Police Inspector Ramesh Gowda said, 'We are looking into the family's allegations. We have questioned Irfan's family and are checking call records and social media accounts. So far, no concrete evidence of abduction has been found.' The police have also formed a special team to trace the girl and Irfan.
Community Tensions Rise
The incident has caused tension in the area, with right-wing groups demanding immediate action. Local Bajrang Dal leaders have staged protests, urging the police to arrest Irfan. The district administration has appealed for calm and assured a fair investigation. Meanwhile, the girl's family is distraught and has sought help from local politicians.
Legal Implications
If proven, the case could fall under the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2022, which prohibits forced conversions. However, legal experts say that consensual interfaith relationships are not illegal. The police are awaiting the girl's statement to determine the nature of her relationship with Irfan. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward.
