Tragic E-Rickshaw Crash in Delhi Claims Life of Six-Year-Old Girl

A devastating road accident in west Delhi has resulted in the death of a six-year-old girl and left her grandmother seriously injured. The incident occurred in the Janakpuri area when the e-rickshaw they were traveling in collided with a car and overturned.

Grandmother's Harrowing Account of the Collision

The grandmother, identified as 57-year-old Mercy Xavier, recounted the traumatic events to authorities. She explained that they had just begun their routine morning journey to the child's school when a speeding car rammed into their e-rickshaw with tremendous force near the Janakpuri Fire Station.

"The impact threw me onto the road," Xavier told police during her statement. "When I regained consciousness, I found myself lying injured with my granddaughter beside me. She was bleeding heavily from her injuries."

Despite being in shock and experiencing significant pain herself, Xavier's immediate concern was for her granddaughter's critical condition. She described pleading with a car driver who was present at the scene to help transport the child to a hospital, but alleged that the individual left without providing any assistance.

"I begged a car driver who was standing there watching us to help and take the child to the hospital," Xavier stated emotionally. "Instead of helping, he ran away. I don't remember if it was the same car which hit us."

Emergency Response and Medical Treatment

Police officials confirmed that they received a PCR call regarding the accident involving a minor girl from Mata Chanan Devi Hospital on the morning of February 17. Both the child and her grandmother were initially taken to this medical facility before being transferred to a hospital in Dwarka for more specialized treatment.

Tragically, the six-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Her grandmother remains under medical care but is reported to be in stable condition according to hospital authorities.

The child's mother, who works at a hospital herself, received the devastating news through a phone call from her mother after the accident. She later learned from a hospital staff member who witnessed the incident that her mother had been crying for help while the child struggled to breathe at the scene.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

Based on preliminary findings from their investigation, Delhi Police have registered a case at the Janakpuri police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash and negligent driving causing death. The offending vehicle involved in the collision has been seized by authorities.

Police identified and apprehended the accused driver, Sanjeev, on Wednesday following the incident. Investigators are currently recording statements from witnesses and examining CCTV footage from cameras installed near the Janakpuri Fire Station and surrounding areas to reconstruct the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal crash.

Broader Concerns About E-Rickshaw Safety in Delhi

This tragic accident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about the operation of e-rickshaws throughout India's capital city. Official data indicates that over two lakh e-rickshaws are registered in Delhi, though enforcement sources suggest the actual number operating on city roads may be significantly higher.

Many of these vehicles allegedly operate without full compliance with established safety norms, raising questions about regulatory oversight and enforcement mechanisms. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by passengers in these commonly used forms of urban transportation.

As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on determining the precise circumstances that led to this heartbreaking loss of a young life and the serious injury of her grandmother during what should have been a routine school journey.
