Goa Police Register Case Against Five for Assaulting Taxi Driver at Ashvem Resort
In a disturbing incident in North Goa, Mandrem police have officially registered a case against five individuals for allegedly restraining and physically assaulting a 36-year-old taxi driver outside a popular resort in Ashvem. The assault occurred on Friday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting a swift police response.
Details of the Violent Confrontation
According to the detailed complaint filed by the victim, Sattari resident Salim Tumbagi, the incident unfolded around 12:30 PM as he was en route to pick up guests from the Dallas Beach Resort. Tumbagi reported that his vehicle was suddenly blocked by a group of five individuals, leading to an immediate and volatile confrontation.
The situation escalated rapidly when one of the suspects allegedly slapped Tumbagi across the face without provocation. In a further act of aggression, another individual forcibly opened the driver-side door, snatched the vehicle's keys from the ignition, and struck the complainant forcefully on his right shoulder with the keys. This violent action resulted in minor but painful injuries to the taxi driver.
Police Investigation and Suspect Identification
Mandrem police have moved quickly in response to the complaint, identifying and questioning two of the suspects involved in the assault. The individuals currently under investigation include Ashvem resident Tulshidas and Parcem resident Yogesh Atmaram Shivji. Both have been thoroughly interrogated as part of the ongoing criminal proceedings.
However, the remaining three suspects implicated in the case have successfully evaded authorities and remain at large. The police have launched an extensive manhunt to locate and apprehend these individuals to ensure they face appropriate legal consequences for their alleged actions.
Ongoing Investigation Under Head Constable Gaonkar
The case is being further investigated by Head Constable Mahesh Gaonkar, who is meticulously examining all available evidence and witness statements. The police are treating this as a serious matter of public safety and assault, with potential charges including wrongful restraint, physical assault, and causing hurt with a dangerous weapon (the vehicle keys).
This incident highlights growing concerns about safety for service workers in tourist areas of Goa, particularly during the peak season when resorts see increased visitor traffic. Local authorities have assured the public that they are taking all necessary measures to ensure such violent incidents do not recur and that justice is served promptly for the victim.
