UP Fire Department Ensures Safety at Magh Mela Amid Multiple Blazes
The Uttar Pradesh fire department played a crucial role in managing fire incidents at the ongoing Magh Mela in Prayagraj, ensuring the safety and security of pilgrims, devotees, and kalpwasis. This effort aligns with the state government's motto of a 'Safe and Secure Magh Mela', as confirmed by officials.
Swift Response and State-of-the-Art Equipment
Equipped with advanced technology and rapid response teams, the fire department tackled a total of 25 fire incidents over the 32-day event. Among these, six were classified as major blazes, while the remaining were minor and quickly controlled. Chief Fire Officer for the Magh Mela, Animesh Singh, emphasized the department's efficiency, noting that they aimed for a three-minute response time but consistently achieved it within two minutes.
Tragic Incident Amidst Safety Efforts
Despite the proactive measures, a tragic incident occurred when a 26-year-old youth sustained serious burn injuries in a tent fire in sector 5 of the mela area. Officials reported that the fire broke out on January 15 at midnight. Although a joint team of police and firemen, along with a fire tender, rushed to the site, the tent was already engulfed in flames. The blaze was extinguished within minutes, but the youth, who was alone inside, suffered severe injuries. He was immediately taken to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
Life-Saving Achievements and Financial Protection
On a positive note, the fire department claimed to have saved more than 148 lives during the Magh Mela. Their swift actions not only prevented loss of life but also averted financial losses estimated to be worth crores of rupees. This highlights the critical importance of their preparedness and rapid intervention in such large-scale gatherings.
Comprehensive Safety Infrastructure
To bolster safety, the department established an extensive network of 20 fire stations and seven fire checkpoints across the seven sectors of the Magh Mela area. This infrastructure was key to their ability to respond promptly to emergencies and maintain a secure environment for all attendees.
Rescue Operations Beyond Human Safety
In addition to human rescues, firemen conducted two rescue operations for pets, including a cow, within the mela campus. This demonstrates the department's commitment to protecting all forms of life and ensuring holistic safety during the event.
