Chhattisgarh Police File FIR Over Vedanta Plant Blast as Death Toll Hits 20
In a significant development following the tragic explosion at Vedanta's power plant in Sakti district, Chhattisgarh police have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against management officials and other individuals. The blast, which occurred on April 14, has now claimed the lives of 20 workers, with the death toll rising as investigations progress.
Legal Action Under BNS Provisions
The case has been filed at the Dabhra police station under specific provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of causing death by negligence and negligent handling of machinery. Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur confirmed that 8 to 10 individuals, comprising company and management officials, have been named in the FIR so far. Authorities have indicated that more arrests and additional legal sections may be applied as the probe deepens.
Details of the Catastrophic Incident
The explosion took place at Singhitarai village when a high-pressure steam tube within the boiler-turbine system burst unexpectedly. This catastrophic failure resulted in injuries to 36 workers. Of these, 20 have succumbed to their injuries, while 16 remain under medical treatment, battling severe burns and trauma.
Preliminary Findings Point to Operational Lapses
An initial inspection conducted by the industrial safety department has highlighted alleged negligence as a key factor. The report notes that the boiler load was sharply increased from 350 megawatts to approximately 590 megawatts in a very short timeframe, nearly doubling production capacity. Investigators suspect that this sudden and drastic rise may have destabilised the entire system, leading to excessive pressure build-up and subsequent mechanical failure.
Officials detailed that furnace pressure surged within mere seconds around 2:33 PM, leaving virtually no opportunity for emergency shutdown or corrective measures to be implemented. The safety department's boiler inspector submitted a comprehensive report after a six-hour site visit, which has now formed the foundational basis for the FIR.
Ongoing Investigations and Inquiries
In addition to the criminal case, a magisterial inquiry has been formally ordered, with a detailed report requested within 30 days. Authorities are also awaiting further forensic and technical reports to ascertain the exact sequence of events and pinpoint accountability. These findings are expected to provide deeper insights into the systemic failures that contributed to this industrial disaster.
