Father Allegedly Strangles Five-Year-Old Daughter to Death After She Cries for Food
A horrific incident has shaken the Doordarshan Enclave area of Jalandhar, where a five-year-old girl was allegedly beaten and strangled to death by her own father after she cried repeatedly for food. The accused, identified as Arvinder Singh, a 30-year-old daily-wage labourer originally from Chhattisgarh, has been arrested and sent to two days of police remand by a local court.
Timeline of the Tragic Event
The tragedy unfolded around 2:30 PM on Wednesday. According to police reports, the child, Niharika, was alone at home with her father while her mother was away at work. Arvinder Singh had started drinking alcohol in the afternoon as it was his holiday.
When the hungry child began crying and asking for food, the father allegedly became enraged. Police stated that he first slapped her, causing her to fall silent briefly before she resumed crying. In a disturbing escalation, the accused then attempted to force alcohol into the child's mouth to quiet her.
When this failed and the child cried louder, Arvinder allegedly lifted her and slammed her repeatedly onto the floor. As Niharika continued sobbing, he reportedly used a dupatta to strangle her, killing her on the spot. Shockingly, after committing the act, he resumed drinking.
Discovery and Investigation
The child's mother returned home in the evening to find her daughter dead. Following a complaint filed by the child's uncle, Himmat Kumar, police registered a case and arrested the accused.
Investigating officer ASI Balwinder Singh confirmed that the accused confessed to the crime, stating "it was a mistake." Police have verified that Arvinder Singh was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident.
