Gauhati High Court Establishes Fast-Track Court for Zubeen Garg Murder Trial
Guwahati: In a significant development aimed at expediting justice, the Gauhati High Court has appointed an exclusive fast-track sessions court to conduct day-to-day trial proceedings in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this crucial judicial step on Thursday, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigation into the beloved singer's tragic demise.
Judicial Appointment and Leadership
The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Justice Ashutosh Kumar, has nominated Sharmila Bhuyan, currently serving as District Judge of Baksa, to preside over this specialized fast-track court. This appointment comes precisely six months after Zubeen Garg's untimely death at age 52 while swimming in Singapore waters on September 19 last year, and three months following the submission of the Special Investigation Team's comprehensive chargesheet.
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the importance of this judicial initiative. "Today marks a significant milestone in our collective pursuit of justice in the Zubeen Garg murder case," Sarma wrote. "The appointment will greatly expedite the judicial process and it reinforces our commitment to ensuring timely justice for all affected parties."
Background and Case Details
The Assam cabinet had formally decided last month to request the Gauhati High Court to establish a dedicated fast-track court specifically for this sensitive case. Zubeen Garg had traveled to Singapore to participate in the fourth edition of the North East India Festival, scheduled for September 17-20, with his performance planned for September 20. His sudden death during this international trip sent shockwaves through the entertainment community and his millions of fans across India.
The Special Investigation Team filed an extensive 12,000-page chargesheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Guwahati, naming seven individuals in connection with the case:
- Festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta
- The singer's manager Siddharth Sharma
- Bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami
- Co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta
- Cousin Sandipon Garg
- Two personal security officers: Nandeswar Borah and Paresh Baishya
Legal Charges and Proceedings
Murder charges have been formally framed against four primary accused: Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprabha Mahanta. Sandipon Garg faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while the two personal security officers are named in the chargesheet for related offenses including criminal conspiracy and breach of trust.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed profound appreciation for the judicial cooperation, stating, "I express my deep appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice, for accepting our request and for his unwavering support in strengthening the cause of justice." This fast-track court represents a concerted effort by both the judicial system and state government to ensure transparent, efficient, and timely resolution of this emotionally charged case that has captured national attention.
