Hyderabad Excise Constable Mowed Down by Ganja-Laden Car, Loses Kidney

In a shocking incident that highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, a 23-year-old excise constable was run over by a car loaded with ganja during a late-night vehicle check in Nizamabad on Friday. The attack inflicted grievous wounds, forcing doctors to remove one of her kidneys, as confirmed by police on Saturday.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The constable, identified as G Soumya, was part of a special excise team actively tracking ganja peddlers in the region. The incident occurred at Madhavnagar village after officials, acting on a tip-off, stopped a Swift car suspected of carrying contraband. According to police reports, the team blocked the car using a departmental vehicle. As Soumya stood in front of the vehicle to prevent its escape, the driver suddenly accelerated, mowing her down in a brutal act of aggression.

After Soumya fell beneath the wheels, the car reversed again in an apparent bid to flee the scene. In its haste, the vehicle slammed into an electric pole while attempting to turn left, which ultimately ended the chase. Two suspects jumped out of the car and fled on foot, while excise staff pursued them. The remaining two individuals were apprehended at the spot and identified as Safiuddin, the driver, and Syed Sohail. The two who escaped were later identified as Raheel and Mateen, police added.

Severe Injuries and Medical Response

Soumya sustained severe internal wounds, including significant damage to her ribs, which necessitated immediate medical intervention. Doctors were forced to remove one of her kidneys due to the extent of the injuries. Currently, she remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but her condition is reported to be out of danger, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy.

Background and Investigation

A search of the car yielded 2.5 kilograms of ganja, confirming the suspicions of the excise team. Nizamabad rural police revealed that the four men were transporting the contraband from Nirmal district to Nizamabad. Notably, one of the accused is a repeat offender with a pending ganja case in Nirmal, underscoring the persistent challenges in combating drug trafficking in the region.

On the complaint filed by excise inspector P Swapna, police have registered an attempt-to-murder case against the suspects. This legal action underscores the seriousness of the offense and the intent to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Personal Details and Family's Anguish

Soumya, who joined the excise force in 2024, is unmarried and had a promising career ahead of her. Relatives shared that she called home shortly before leaving for duty, highlighting the normalcy of her day before the tragic turn of events. "At 6.30pm, Soumya telephoned us to say she was heading out for a special field task. At 8pm, officials told us she was in hospital," family members recounted, painting a poignant picture of the sudden shock and worry they experienced.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement personnel in their daily duties, particularly in operations targeting illegal activities like drug peddling. The community and authorities are now rallying to support Soumya's recovery while ensuring a thorough investigation into the case.
