Former Domestic Help Arrested for Brutal Rape and Murder of IIT Graduate in South Delhi
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the upscale Kailash Hills locality of south Delhi, a 22-year-old IIT graduate, the daughter of a senior bureaucrat, was allegedly raped and murdered at her residence on Wednesday morning. The victim was alone at home when the attack occurred, as her parents had left for their routine gym session. She was later discovered in a pool of blood and declared brought dead at the hospital.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest Within 12 Hours
Police acted swiftly, arresting a 23-year-old former domestic help, identified as Rahul, from a hotel in Dwarka within just 12 hours of the crime. The accused had been dismissed from the household approximately six weeks earlier over alleged financial misconduct. Investigators believe he returned to the house with the intent to commit robbery and is also accused of sexual assault and murder.
Detailed Timeline of the Tragic Events
The incident unfolded around 6:40 AM on Wednesday. Joint CP (South) Vijay Kumar stated that the victim's parents had gone for their gym session, leaving a spare key outside the flat for the house help, who typically arrived between 6:30 and 7:00 AM. The accused, familiar with the family's routine and the key's location, entered the house and attacked the woman while she was studying.
According to police reports, the suspect demanded the passcode to an almirah, bludgeoned her with a blunt object, and subsequently strangled her with a mobile phone charging cable. CCTV footage revealed the suspect entering the colony at 6:39 AM, accessing the house around 6:49 AM, and departing between 7:20 and 7:22 AM after changing clothes and carrying a backpack.
The victim's parents returned around 8:00 AM to find their daughter unconscious on the floor. She was immediately rushed to Fortis Hospital but was declared brought dead upon arrival. Police confirmed she suffered severe head injuries and strangulation.
Investigation Uncovers Chilling Details and Prior Crimes
Sources indicated that the victim resisted before being overpowered. The accused hit her on the head with a stick to subdue her before using the charging cable. CCTV review showed him entering in dark clothing and exiting in different attire with a bag. A security guard reported that another domestic worker briefly interacted with the suspect as he left, but he claimed to have urgent work and departed quickly.
Police revealed that the suspect remained inside the house for about 40 minutes, ransacking almirahs and safes, and fleeing with cash and valuables estimated between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh. Over 15 police teams were deployed across Delhi and Rajasthan, leading to his arrest in Dwarka.
Further investigation uncovered that the accused is also wanted in a sexual assault case in Rajasthan's Alwar district, where an FIR had been registered for rape prior to the Delhi crime. He had worked as domestic help in the household for eight months, recommended through a contact, but was removed due to financial misconduct and alleged gambling-related borrowing. His knowledge of the house layout, CCTV system, and family routines facilitated the crime.
Strong Evidence and Community Mourning
Forensic teams have collected evidence, and a post-mortem report is awaited to confirm sexual assault. DCP (South East) Hemant Tiwari affirmed that strong evidence has been gathered for a watertight case, aiming for the strictest punishment under the law for charges of rape, murder, and robbery.
The victim, an IIT Delhi graduate preparing for the UPSC examination, was described as academically strong and culturally active. Greater Kailash MLA Shikha Roy expressed personal grief, noting her sincerity, discipline, and talent in studies and dance, highlighting her humble nature despite her focus on academics.
